Theodore C. ''Ted' Shaffer, 1996-1997 |
Past District Governor Theodore C. “Ted” Shaffer, has a long history of service above self in the Point Marion Rotary Club, as well as on the District level. First joining in 1972, Ted went on to become Club Treasurer, and Club President, serving two different terms in the latter capacity. Over the years, he has also served numerous terms on the Board of Directors and chaired a number of committees, in addition to holding down his job, serving on the Albert Gallatin School Board, and on the Point Marion Boro Council. Through his association with the School Board, Ted, has been particularly interested in the RYLA program, and seeing to it that Albert Gallatin was well represented at RYLA, with very qualified students from the District being sponsored by Point Marion Rotary. After helping with PDG Tut Callahan’s District Conference in 1987, and through his friendship with PDG Ted N. Shaffer of Murrysville-Export, Ted decided to extend his Rotary journey by accepting the nomination of our Club to run for District Governor. He was accepted, and served the District in the Rotary year, 1996 – 97. As with so many District Governors, the success of their year depends in a large part on the cooperation and assistance of their spouse, and certainly this was no exception during Ted’s year. He and Patty attended all the District Clubs, and participated throughout the year in various Club and District Activities, including being the first District Governor to march in the Canonsburg-Houston July4th Parade the entire distance of three miles! He was still active as well in his home club, and brought back many interesting ideas and suggestions that he learned from his travels in the district. Ted was also the first District Governor to miss his entire Conference due to being hospitalized with a severe back infection. Again, with the assistance of First Lady Pat, and PDG Ted Shaffer, his District Conference at Seven Springs was such a success, that he was able to pass on surplus Conference funds to incoming District Governor Ed Olsavicky - another first for District 7330! The Rotary Foundation has also been very dear to both Ted and Patty, and over the years, they have been sustaining members, Paul Harris Fellows, Benefactors, and are now major donors to the Foundation, with their entire family having been named Paul Harris Fellows. Ted’s goal for Foundation Giving during his year was 87,000.00. He was successful in this endeavor as well, for it was the first time that District 7330 went over the $100,000.00 mark of annual giving to the Foundation. Although still plagued with health problems, Ted remains active in Point Marion, interested in District activities, and he and Patty, whenever possible, attend Zone Institutes and International Conventions.
